Disc brake, also called floating brake or caliper brake, is mainly composed of brake caliper, brake disc and friction plate. The rotating element in the friction plate is a metal disc with the end face as the working surface, called brake disc, which is fixed on the wheel hub with screws. It is exposed to the outside and looks like a good decoration. Compared with the drum brake, the Disc brake has the following advantages: 1) There is no friction force, so the brake efficiency is less affected by the friction coefficient, that is, the efficiency is more stable. 2) After immersion, the efficiency decreases slightly and can be restored to normal after only one or two brake applications. 3) When the output braking torque is the same, the size and mass are smaller. 4) The thermal expansion of the brake disc along the thickness direction is extremely small, and it will not cause a significant increase in brake clearance like the thermal expansion of the brake drum, leading to a larger stroke of the brake rocker arm. The disadvantage of disc brake is its low efficiency.

There are two types of brakes that rely on friction between discs to achieve braking: full disc and point disc.

① Full disc brake: composed of fixed disc and moving disc. The fixed disc is connected to the fixed housing through a guide flat key or spline (see key connection or spline connection), while the moving disc is installed on the brake shaft with a guide flat key or spline and rotates with the shaft. When subjected to axial force, the moving and stationary discs press against each other and brake. This type of brake has a compact structure, large friction area, high braking torque, but poor heat dissipation conditions. To increase the braking torque or reduce the radial size, it is possible to increase the number of discs and cover the surface of the discs with friction materials such as asbestos.

② Point disc brake: the brake pad is braked by clamping the brake disc installed on the shaft with a hydraulic drive device. To increase the braking torque, several pairs of brake pads can be used. Each pair of brake pads is arranged in pairs radially to prevent the brake shaft from being subjected to radial forces and bending moments. The point disc brake has better heat dissipation conditions than the full disc brake, and is more convenient to assemble and disassemble. Disc brakes are small in size, small in mass, and sensitive in action, so they are mostly used in hoisting and transportation machinery, winches and other machinery.
