Flashover refers to the breakdown between two electrodes that occurs along the surface of solid insulation in a gas under high voltage. The voltage between the two electrodes immediately before a flashover occurs is called the flashover voltage. Due to factors such as the surface state and shape of solid insulation, the flashover voltage is always lower than (or at most equal to) the spark discharge voltage of gas gaps with the same electrode structure and distance.

Insulators or insulation sleeves of high-voltage transmission and transformation equipment contaminated with pollution (industrial pollution, salt, etc.) can significantly reduce their flashover voltage when exposed to moisture (especially when encountering fog, dew, frost, or light snow), and even flash over under the working voltage of electrical equipment, causing serious accidents. This situation is called pollution flashover and can be prevented by improving insulation design and regular cleaning.

When a destructive discharge occurs along a solid insulation surface in a gas or liquid dielectric, it is called flashover. A common flashover occurs along the interface between a gas and a solid dielectric. The destructive discharge along the surface of the insulator string and the surface of the sleeve is called flashover. So the term flashover is only applicable to discharge phenomena under special conditions.

From the appearance of faults and some actual anomalies, it can be basically attributed to typical flashover; Further investigation revealed that during the machining process of the motor base, the blind hole of the fixed end cover was opened, and the fine iron powder that appeared during the tapping and assembly process entered the inner cavity of the motor. During the operation of the motor, the iron powder above the base and in the side end holes vibrated and fell to the position below the base, creating the conditions for flashover to occur.

From the consequences of this case, we would like to remind everyone that the holes in motor components may seem simple, but when they are through holes and blind holes, they should be strictly processed according to the diagram, especially for blind holes, which must have specific functions and principles.
