1. ?How does the material being processed influence the laser choice?

Where the cutting tasks involve wood, plastics, glass or textiles all the way to paper, the CO2 laser is needed with its far infra-red radiation, and the cutting tasks invole only metal, fiber laser cutting is the best choice.

2. What other factors must be considerd before making a final choice.

Safety aspect

When a fiber laser with its wavelength of 1um is used, increased safety measures must be taken. The laser process area must be within a light tight enclosure, monitoring the active process is done by cameras or even a microphone. Covers and shields for CO2-based-systems can be made for PMMA or glass.

Relibility

Reliability is derived from the planned economically useful life of the system in relation to the actually useful economic life. Service periodsm, etc., limit the reliabitity of the laser. The fiber laser does not need consumables like the CO2 laser or Dl-Water inside the system, that is why no downtime periods are required to exchange consumables. The cooling of the diodes is by heat conduction (passive cooling) which avoids erosion and corrosion issues that can occur bu active cooling. The complete unit of the fiber laser and also any individual pump unit is exchangeable as a field service. Pump module management makes the laser work with a failed pump unit even at specified output power.

The pump module life time of the fiber laser is only limited bu the pumping diodes, which are nowadays well accepted being a long life component.
