The working principle is mainly based on the characteristics of the IGCT (Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristor), a power electronic device: Basic Structure and Principle Foundation: In essence, the IGCT combines the advantages of thyristors and gate turn-off thyristors (GTOs), and makes improvements in the structure and driving mode. The IGCT is composed of a large-area thyristor chip and an integrated gate drive circuit. In the normal state, the IGCT is in a blocking state. At this time, a voltage is applied between the anode and the cathode, but no current passes through. Conduction Principle: When it is necessary to make the IGCT conduct, the gate drive circuit will apply a positive trigger pulse signal to the gate. This pulse signal creates an electric field between the gate and the cathode, thereby injecting electrons into the internal structure of the thyristor. The injected electrons will trigger the avalanche effect of the carriers (electrons and holes) inside the thyristor, causing the thyristor to quickly enter the conducting state. Once conducting, the IGCT can, like an ordinary thyristor, allow a large current to pass between the anode and the cathode. The magnitude of the current depends on the load of the external circuit and the power supply voltage. Turn-off Principle: Different from traditional thyristors, the IGCT can be turned off through gate control. When it is necessary to turn off the IGCT, the gate drive circuit will apply a reverse gate voltage, quickly extracting the carriers between the gate and the cathode and disrupting the carrier balance inside the thyristor, enabling the IGCT to be turned off rapidly. This rapid turn-off capability is one of the important characteristics that distinguish the IGCT from ordinary thyristors, giving it an advantage in many applications that require frequent switching operations. Commutation Process: In practical applications, the IGCT is usually combined with other power electronic devices (such as diodes, capacitors, etc.) to form a converter or inverter circuit. In these circuits, the IGCT needs to perform commutation operations, that is, transfer the current from one device to another. The commutation process is usually achieved by controlling the conduction and turn-off times of the IGCT, as well as by utilizing the capacitance and inductance elements in the circuit. For example, in a three-phase inverter, by sequentially controlling the conduction and turn-off of the IGCTs of different phases, direct current can be converted into three-phase alternating current for output. Control and Protection: The IGCT module is usually equipped with a special control and protection circuit, which is used to monitor the operating status of the IGCT, such as parameters like current, voltage, and temperature. When abnormal conditions (such as overcurrent, overvoltage, or overheating) are detected, the control and protection circuit will take corresponding measures, such as quickly turning off the IGCT, to protect the safety of the device and the entire system.
