AS 4088 Resistance to smoldering fire - Scope of the standard:

This standard specifies the test and performance requirements for the ignitability of filling and covering materials used in upholstered furniture for domestic use.

The covering and filling materials are tested separately or, if they are true composites, together using a smoldering fire source.

The requirements include the accidental use of a smoldering fire source but do not include acts of vandalism.

AS 4088 Smoldering Resistance Test - Purpose of Standard:

The purpose of this standard is to provide the furniture industry, suppliers and purchasers with a means of assessing the performance of filling and covering materials in domestic upholstered furniture when subjected to a smoldering ignition source.

Application in Fire Hazard Assessments The test results of this specification do not in themselves indicate the fire hazard of upholstered furniture under actual fire conditions and should not be used for fire hazard assessments without consideration of other supporting information.

AS 4088 Resistance to Smoldering Test - Product Scope:

? Covering Material: Any material used to cover stuffing. May include, but is not limited to, fabrics and sheets, including leather.

?  Stuffing Material: Any material used to fill or pad the upholstered parts of furniture.

?  Flaming: Burns in the gas phase and emits light.

Backing: Any of a number of materials (fabric, foam and similar) used between the covering material and the stuffing material of the upholstered part of upholstered furniture.
