Brief introduction

OPGW optical cable (also known as fiber optic composite overhead ground wire) is a type of optical cable that is placed in the ground wire of an overhead high-voltage transmission line to form a fiber optic communication network on the transmission line. This structural form combines the dual functions of ground wire and communication, and is generally referred to as OPGW optical cable. 250 μ m optical fiber is inserted into a loose tube made of high modulus material, and the loose tube is filled with waterproof compound. A layer of double-sided coated steel strip (PSP) is longitudinally wrapped around the loose tube, and a water blocking material is added between the steel strip and the loose tube to ensure the compactness and longitudinal water blocking of the optical cable. Two parallel steel wires are placed on both sides and extruded into a polyethylene sheath to form the cable.

Characteristic

(1) Lines with high voltage exceeding 110kV have larger spans (usually above 250M).

(2) Easy to maintain, easy to solve line crossing problems, and its mechanical characteristics can meet the needs of large line crossings.

(3) The outer layer of OPGW is metal armor, which has no effect on high-voltage corrosion and degradation.

(4) OPGW must be powered off during construction, resulting in significant losses. Therefore, OPGW should be used in the construction of high-voltage lines above 110kV.

(5) In the performance indicators of OPGW, the larger the short-circuit current, the more it is necessary to use good conductors for armor, which correspondingly reduces the tensile strength. However, when the tensile strength is constant, to increase the short-circuit current capacity, the only way is to increase the metal cross-sectional area, which leads to an increase in cable diameter and weight. This poses a safety issue for the strength of transmission towers.

Structure

OPGW optical cables are mainly used on 500KV, 220KV, and 110KV voltage level lines, and are often used on newly built lines due to factors such as power outages and safety.

There are mainly three categories: aluminum tube type, aluminum frame type, and (stainless) steel tube type.
