Citronellol is a light yellow transparent liquid, soluble in alcohol, ether, almost insoluble in water. It has a sweet smell of roses. Melting point 77-83 °C(lit.), specific rotation -0.3 ~ +0.3° C(D/20 °C)(neat), boiling point 225 °C(lit.), density 0.857 g/mL at 25 °C(lit.), vapor density 5.4 (vs air), vapor pressure ~0.02 mm Hg (25 °C), refractive index n20/D 1.456(lit.), flash point 209 °F, storage conditions 2-8°C, soluble in chloroform, methanol (small amount).

1. Widely used in the preparation of perfume, soap and cosmetics flavor 2. Used for extracting geranyl alcohol or citronellal, and also used as soap essence 3.
