The control characteristics are a set of parameters that help define how the frequency and power of the frequency converter are changed to meet the programming settings in high-end frequency converters. This is crucial to ensure that the correct amount of torque is applied at the appropriate time point. This cannot be confused with the set values set during debugging. Most manufacturers offer several different control features that can assist specific applications, with the most common four being:

Volts/Hertz (V/Hz): Controls the magnitude of the relationship between voltage and current. In scenarios where flow is more important than pressure, it is beneficial for fan and pump applications. Within the entire torque range, maintain the motor slip within 1/2 (basically the stator lags slightly behind the rotor), but may not be able to maintain the torque below 2 Hz.

Sensorless Vector (SV): Provides higher starting torque and speed control within a range of 1/4 of motor slip. Suitable for deep well pumps and high constant torque applications (automatic tuning should be used when using this control method).

Flux vector (open loop): Increase V/Hz by providing amplitude and angle control. By sensing the magnetic flux and direction of the motor, more accurate motor speed and torque control can be provided.

Closed loop vector: This method utilizes an encoder installed on the motor to provide shaft position and speed to the frequency converter. Using this method, the motor can generate full torque at zero speed. Very suitable for crane applications.

Some of them interact with each other, while others do not allow the use of different parameters. For example, setting torque control can affect automatic tuning capability.

Unique "intelligent" parameters of frequency converter manufacturers

Nowadays, many frequency converters include various "intelligent" functions that can help further improve the efficiency and lifespan of motors. However, as these functions vary depending on the frequency converter, we often see that many functions are not fully utilized.

For example, some frequency converters are equipped with sensors to monitor the power required to generate a certain speed. When setting up the frequency converter for the first time, a baseline power curve can be established, and through programming, an alarm will be issued when the bearing is worn and more power is needed to generate the same speed.

Some frequency converters can also perform certain operations based on triggering conditions. For example, a frequency converter connected to a pump can sense whether the pipeline is blocked based on the amount of power required to move the fluid through the pipeline. Intelligent frequency converters can be programmed to temporarily increase power to clear pipeline blockages.

When fully understanding and implementing these manufacturers' unique intelligent functions, they can improve their energy efficiency and proactively perform some maintenance tasks. When these functions are combined with the control characteristics discussed above, users can obtain more power from the frequency converter without considering whether it operates at the low or high end.
