三相電動機在起動時，起動電流很大，可達到額定電流的4~7倍，很大的起動電流，在短時間內會在線路上造成較大的電壓降落，這不僅影響電動機本身的起動也會影響到同一線路上的其他電動機和電器設備的正常工作。為此，對大容量電動機且起停頻繁時，為了限制起動電流，必須采取降壓起動。所謂降壓起動，就是在電動機起動時降低加在電動機定子繞組上的電壓，當電動機轉起來以后，再將加在定子繞組上的電壓恢復到正常值。由于電流與電壓成正比關系，所以降低起動時的電壓能減小起動電流。
