New crib standard in Europe: EN1130-2:2019

Babies need more than a dozen hours of sleep a day, so a crib that accompanies their sleep becomes especially important.

Recently, Europe has issued a new version of the crib standard EN 1130:2019. How does this standard compare with the old version EN1130-1&-2:1996? The new version of the standard EN 1130:2019 "Children's furniture -- cribs -- Safety requirements and test methods" provides safety requirements and test methods for the use of domestic and non-domestic cribs, including cradles, hammocks and bedside beds.

Compared with EN 1130-1:1996 and EN 1130-2:1996, this version of the standard increases the mechanical requirements, drawing on experience from bedside accidents in Europe and elsewhere. The new standards also revised requirements for chemical hazards, flammability risks, choking risks from getting caught in gaps and openings in bed frames, falling risks, instructions for use of baby mattresses and warnings for parents.

This standard is revised in the following 6 areas:

1. Integrate the two parts of EN 1130:1996 into one document;

2. Updated the structure of the standard based on the risk assessment method;

3. Update the test methods in EN 1130-2:1996;

4. Increase the requirements and test methods for floating cribs and bedside cribs;

5. Increase the related requirements of chemical hazards and thermal hazards;

6. Increase the deviation consideration of combustion performance.

Scope of products covered by the new EN 1130:2019 standard:

(1) All household or non-household products;

(2) The maximum internal length of all bed surfaces shall not exceed 900mm;

(3) The standard does not contain any safety requirements for electronic components;

(4) Cots that are not intended for medical purposes or hospital use;

(5) When a product has multiple functions, other functions shall meet the corresponding product standards at the same time.

This standard has been developed by the Sub-Technical Committee on Furniture of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN/TC 207) and can underpin the European Commission's General Product Safety Directive GPSD (2001/95/EC).
