It's always a fun to grow new garden plants from the dinner plate, and it's a great way to introduce kids to the wonderful world of gardening. Growing a cherry tree from a seed after you (and the kids) enjoy eating fresh cherries purchased at the grocery store or produce stand is a prime example of that.

Prepare The Cherry Seed

A mature, native cherry tree will produce seeds that pass through a cold winter before germinating. That means you will have to prepare the seed for germination by giving it a cold treatment.

Winter, Spring or Summer Cherry Seed Cold Treatment

If you eat cherries in the winter, spring or summer and wish to start a cherry tree from the seed(s), save however many cherry seeds you wish to plant and wash them off under cool running water. Lay on paper towel to drain. When the cherry seeds have dried, place them in a opaque container that is airtight and place the container in the refrigerator for a minimum of three months.

The container must be opaque and the seeds must remain refrigerated at all times. The idea is to mimic the conditions in which the cherry seeds would be in if they were planted outdoors during the late fall and winter. Keeping the cherry seeds refrigerated longer than three months until the optimum spring planting time is fine.

Fall Cherry Seed Preparation

If you eat cherries in the late fall, you can plant the cherry seeds directly outdoors so they can over-winter in the soil and receive a natural cold treatment.

How To Plant The Cherry Seed

Plant the cherry seed directly in the soil in late fall or in the spring after all danger of frost has past.

Prepare the planting hole by digging down in the soil 6-8 inches and make the planting hole about six inches in diameter. Mix a little compost in the soil before backfilling the hole to prevent soil compaction. This will provide enough loose soil for the cherry seed to form roots easily. Water the cheery seed in and place a marker of some type at the planting location. In a few weeks a cheery tree sapling will sprout. Apply at layer of mulch and keep the tree sapling well watered throughout the summer months.

You can start the cherry tree indoors in early spring by planting the cherry seed in a growing medium or seed starting soil mixture, then transplant the cherry tree outdoors in the spring after all danger of frost has past.

Your newly created cherry tree will take 5-7 years before producing cherries, and if the cherry seed came from a hybrid cherry, the fruit on your cherry tree will be different from the original cherry.

A cherry tree is easy to grow from a seed and is a fun project for young gardener's.
