The mulberry tree serves as an ornamental tree in the landscape. Leaves vary in shape and turn yellow in the fall. Dark reddish-brown bark highlights the glowing fall foliage, adding to the tree's visual interest. This variety of mulberry tree produces juicy, blackberry-shaped fruit very sweet to the taste. Hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 4 to 8, these deciduous trees grow readily from seed.

How to grow:

1. Fill a bowl halfway with water. Place the mulberry fruit in the water, and mash the fruit with your fingers to separate the pulp from the seeds. Remove floating pulp from the bowl and discard. Gather the seeds that sink to the bottom as these are the most viable. Place the seeds on a dry paper towel and let them sit until they are dry.

2. Dump the water from the bowl and wipe away any clinging debris from the fruit. Add two or three handfuls of sand to the bowl. Pour water over the sand to moisten it thoroughly. Scoop the sand out, holding it over the bowl's top until the excess water finishes draining away. Place the sand in a plastic zipper bag.

3. Place the seeds into the bag, pushing them down into the middle of the sand. Ensure sand covers the seeds completely and seal the bag. Place the bag in a refrigerator with a constant temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Leave the bag there for 90 days to allow the seeds to stratify, or chill, so they will break out of dormancy once planted.

4. Fill a 6-inch pot with sterile potting soil to 1 3/4 inches below its top. Tamp the soil down to compact it slightly. Add more soil if necessary to maintain the proper level in the pot. Fill the pot one to two times with water to moisten the soil completely.

5. Remove the bag from the refrigerator. Take one seed from the bag and brush any sand from its surface. Place the seed in the center of the pot, on top of the soil. Cover the seed with a 1/4-inch layer of potting soil.

6. Pour water slowly into the pot to moisten the top layer of soil without washing the seed out of place. Set a plastic bag on top of the pot, pulling its edges one to two inches down the pot's sides. Wrap a rubber band around the pot's sides on top of the bag to secure it.

7. Place a heating mat in a room that has a constant daytime temperature of 80 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit and a nighttime temperature of 68 to 70 degrees. Position the mat on a flat surface in bright, indirect sunlight and away from heating or cooling vents. Set the mat's temperature to 86 degrees.

8. Lower the mat's temperature to 68 degrees every evening and raise it back to 86 degrees every morning. Check the pot each day for signs of moisture loss. Remove the bag and water when the top 1/4-inch layer of soil begins to dry. Replace the bag over the pot after watering. Watch for germination seven to 14 days after planting.

9.Turn the mat off and remove it from below the pot once germination occurs. Remove the plastic bag as well. Reduce watering to when the top one to two inches of soil becomes dry.

10.Fertilize the seedling when it reaches 3 to 4 inches high and develops at least three sets of true leaves. Mix 1/2-teaspoon 10-10-10 nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium water-soluble fertilizer with one gallon of water. Pour the fertilizer directly into the pot. Reapply the fertilizer once per week in place of a watering.
