Shipping transfers approximately 3 to 5 billion tones of ballast water each year. As a result, IMO has adopted Ballast Water Management Convention in Feb. 2004 which brought up new ocean environment protection policy to settle the problems caused by ballat water.The regulation D-1 of this convention is the ballat water exchange standard and it can be used for handling the transferring problem. However, the new ships keel laying from 2009 and retrofits which are according to the below schedule should be in compliance with regulation D-2,which is the ballast water performance standard and ballast water discharge must be after treated and reaching to the standard.
