It's shock absorbing device
API 7-1 SJ Type Two-way Shock Sub
The two-way shock sub type SJ is an effective shock absorbing device. It can be used to reduce or eliminate both transversal and longitudinal vibration of drill string, thus it helps maintain normal weight-on-bit (WOB) and torque, so that it helps to reduce drill string connection fatigue and prolong drill string life.
