254SMO (UNS S31254, EN 1.4547) is a high-alloy super austenitic stainless steel, primarily composed of chromium (19.5-20.5%), nickel (17.5-18.5%), molybdenum (6.0-6.5%), and nitrogen, with a carbon content ≤0.02%.

This material is specifically designed for high-chloride ion environments, exhibiting excellent resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and uniform corrosion. With a PREN value of 43, it is suitable for applications in marine engineering, petrochemicals, flue gas desulfurization, seawater desalination, and food processing.

Its properties are optimized through solution treatment (quenching at 1040-1100℃), achieving a tensile strength ≥620MPa and a yield strength ≥320MPa, combining high strength with good toughness.

The manufacturing process involves traditional methods such as forging and rolling, and specialized materials such as ERNiCrMo-3 are required for the welding.

The applicable standards include ASTM A240, EN 1.4547, and GB/T 3280. It can replace some nickel-based alloys and titanium alloys in chloride-acidic environments.

254SMo also exhibits excellent resistance to uniform corrosion. Especially in halogenated acids, this steel outperforms ordinary stainless steel. Its carbon content is<0.03%, hence it is called pure austenitic stainless steel (<0.01% is called super austenitic stainless steel). Super stainless steel is a special type of stainless steel, differing from ordinary stainless steel in its chemical composition. It refers to a high-alloy stainless steel containing high nickel, high chromium, and high molybdenum. A well-known example is 254SMo containing 6% Mo. This type of steel has excellent resistance to localized corrosion, exhibiting good resistance to pitting corrosion (PI≥40) and good resistance to stress corrosion under conditions of seawater, aeration, crevices, and low-velocity erosion. It is a substitute for Ni-based alloys and titanium alloys. Secondly, it possesses superior high-temperature and corrosion resistance, making it irreplaceable by 304 stainless steel. Furthermore, from a stainless steel classification perspective, the microstructure of special stainless steel is a stable austenitic microstructure.
