With the popularity of smart wearable devices, smart watches, as an important category, must pass CE certification and RoHS certification before entering the European market. As the core component of smart watches, the battery testing link is directly related to whether the product can be listed in compliance. This article will deeply analyze the key points in battery testing to help manufacturers complete the certification process efficiently.
1. Core requirements of CE certification for battery testing
1. Safety performance test
According to the EN 62133 standard, safety tests such as overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit, and thermal shock are required. Among them, the overcharge test requires charging with a current of 1C to 1.5 times the rated voltage for 7 hours; the thermal shock test requires 10 cycles at -40℃~75℃.
2. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test
According to the EN 301 489 standard, it is necessary to ensure that the battery does not generate electromagnetic interference when working. Focus on testing radiated interference (30MHz-6GHz frequency band) and conducted interference (150kHz-30MHz), with a field strength limit of 30dBμV/m.
2. Special requirements for RoHS certification
1. Hazardous substance detection
Six restricted substances need to be tested for battery positive and negative electrode materials, electrolytes, etc.: lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). The cadmium content must be <0.01% and the lead content must be <0.1%.
2. Material traceability
A complete supply chain material declaration sheet (MSDS) is required, including component analysis reports for auxiliary materials such as diaphragms and adhesives.
3. Common test failure points and solutions
1. High temperature cycle failure
When tested at 85℃, some batteries will have a capacity decay of >20%. It is recommended to optimize the electrolyte formula and add additives such as vinylene carbonate (VC) to improve thermal stability.
2. Fire caused by needle puncture test
According to the UN38.3 standard, a φ3mm steel needle is required to puncture the battery at a speed of 25mm/s. Improvement plans include using ceramic coated diaphragms or controlling the proportion of negative silicon-carbon materials to less than 15%.
IV. Suggestions for optimizing the certification process
1. Pre-test mechanism
It is recommended to conduct a preliminary test before formal inspection. For example, use a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) to detect the decomposition temperature of the material to ensure that it is >200℃ to avoid the risk of thermal runaway.
2. Key points for document preparation
The technical documents must include: battery specification, BMS circuit diagram, FMEA analysis report. Pay special attention to providing proof of the trigger threshold of the protection circuit, such as overvoltage protection response time ≤50ms.
V. Latest regulatory developments
From 2024, the EU will enforce the new regulation (EU) 2023/814, requiring:
- Battery carbon footprint declaration must include mining and smelting data
- The proportion of recycled materials must reach 16% for cobalt and 85% for lead
- New perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) detection items
