The excitation winding of a brushless excitation is powered by a sub-exciter that sends electrical energy through a thyristor to the AC exciter, which is generally used for motors with a high AC frequency. The thyristor-controlled current converter is controlled by the excitation controller, which can be built from a DSP chip in an era of advanced digital chips. The cost effectiveness of the control circuit can be greatly improved. The excitation winding of the exciter generates the corresponding excitation current to excite the AC exciter. The frequency of the AC exciter armature voltage is generally 1 to 2 times higher than the working frequency. The potential induced by the AC exciter is rectified by an uncontrolled rectifier bridge to produce a DC current to supply the generator excitation winding.

Features of the brushless excitation method:

(1) Brushless excitation has no contact parts, carbon brushes and slip rings, making it simple to maintain and highly reliable for long-term continuous operation with little or no maintenance.

(2) Since there are no rotating contacting conductive parts, no sparks will be generated, making it suitable for operation in harsh environmental conditions such as flammable gases and dust.

(3) The reliability of the AVR design is easy to achieve due to the small excitation power.

(4) For the main engine, it is a self-excited synchronous generator, easy to run in parallel.

(5) Compared with brushed generators, it is larger and consumes more effective materials.
