The shopping cart was inspired by a folding chair.

By the late 1930s, a major change had occurred: freon was developed in 1930, and freezers began to spread widely. By the end of the 1930s, more than half the homes in the United States had refrigerators.

In this way, shopping consumers can buy more goods at one time than what they ate that day.

Then came the problem: in those days, self-service supermarkets only offered baskets made of metal silk.

If a housewife feels she is carrying too much, she automatically reduces her desire to buy.

'if we could get the housewife to carry two baskets of shopping and free up one hand to pick the goods, we could do more business,' Goldman recalled in 1970.

Goldman began to realize that in order to sell more products, he had to find a way to make shopping easier for his customers.

Goldman found a big pain point.

The solution was this: when the clerk saw that a customer's basket was full, he would take it to the cashier and give them an empty basket. This proved a bit too complicated.

As Goldman struggled, he saw a folding chair in his office one night and felt a bright future beckoning. Goldman jumped up.

Goldman was so excited that he didn't sleep. Early the next morning, he went to a repair shop and found a repairman.

Thus came the life-changing shopping trolley.

A folding chair, a basket, four wheels, and a supermarket cart were born.

Goldman also made several improvements to shopping carts, including baskets that can be removed when not in use and folding carts that can be nested on top of each other to save space.

Goldman was thrilled, tripling the customer's buying power and making the whole shopping experience so much easier that housewives no longer have to carry 15-20 pound baskets around.
