Issued with the original 46 page accompaniment to mitchell\'\'s new map of texas, oregon and california. The hand colored map is attached to the backboard and folds into the publisher\'\'s well designed leather binding. The front board has a rectangular panel with a double-fillet border with star tool corner pieces and titled in gilt texas, oregon and california. The map has great historical value as it shows a time of geographic discovery and political change. The accompaniment reads, in great detail of the territories of texas, oregon and california. It also gives information on iowa, Indian territory, and missouri territory. The map shows a young texas which joined the union as a new state in 1845, which LED to the u. S. - mexican war in 1846. The inside front board is marked b. Of 12th sam huston rep. Of texas. The front index page is marked e. L. Oatman 12th infty. U. S. Fort huston ty. Of texas june 7,1848. Fremont comdg. Gen. this mark alone is very exciting as this shows the 12th being under general john fremont\'\'s command only 3 months before fremont resigned his commission due to a mutiny trial. This story is very well documented and very interesting as president polk was even involved. The back board is marked capt. O. O. Howard w. C. R. Mch.14,1849 under orders on tra.24 days from post. No return oatman. When closed the book measures 5 1/4\'\'\'\' tall by 3 1/4\'\'\'\' wide. Map measures 23 3/4\'\'\'\' tall by 20 3/4\'\'\'\' wide. Published by S. Augustus mitchell, philadelphia 1846. A rare opportunity to own a piece of the old west. Condition: The overall condition is excellent and totally complete and original. For purposes of accuracy, we note the following flaws: At the very top of the spine there is a 1/2\'\'\'\' tear to the fabric only, that has no effect on the accompaniment or map. There are small separations (without loss) at the 3 of the fold corners of the map. At the bottom right margin there is a tear (without loss) that extends 1/4 from the outside border. There is a tear (without loss) at the attached edge of the left side of the map which extends about 1 from the left margin. The blank index page that is marked in ink e. L. Oatman 12th infty. U. S. Fort huston is detached from binding. Otherwise this map and its cover and accompaniment are in very strong and tight condition. I personally, would choose to leave this pocket map just as it is but it would be very easy to completely conserve the map and bring it to a near mint state. Colors are strong, binding solid......... Overall, as nice as you find these!!
