Spherical plain bearings are produced in various designs and with various combinations of sliding contact surfaces. Each design and combination has characteristic properties which make it particularly suitable for certain applications.

To select a certain bearing type and to establish the requisite bearing size, the main factors which have to be considered are the loads, the load carrying capacity of the bearing and the expected service life. The choice of the appropriate type of bearing (radial, angular contact or thrust) is determined by the direction of the load which will act on the bearing, while the choice of the appropriate sliding contact surface combination is primarily determined by the way in which the load acts (constant or alternating direction).

The influence of the operating temperature on the bearing materials, particularly the material of the sliding layer, must be considered when selecting the type of bearing. All spherical plain bearings can be used without restriction in the temperature range –30 to +50 °C. At higher temperatures the load carrying capacity is reduced, depending on the material and sliding contact surface combination. This is taken into account by a temperature factor when calculating the basic rating service life.

Additionally, it must be checked to see whether the material of the seals will limit the temperature at which the bearing can be used or, for bearings which require maintenance, whether the lubricant chosen will have sufficient lubricating properties at the operating temperature.
