What are Perlite ?

Perlite are not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. The distinguishing feature which sets Perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands from four to twenty times its original volume.

Character: Non-toxic, flavorless, lightweight, corrosion resisting, netural PH 6.5-7.5 etc.

Size: 100mesh, 200mesh, 0.15-1.18mm, 1-3mm, 2-4mm, 3-6mm, 4-8mm etc.

Expanded Perlite 

Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content, typically formed by the hydration of obsidian.

In the construction and manufacturing fields, it is used in lightweight plasters and mortars,insulation

and ceiling tiles.

When Perlite is used as an aggregate in concrete, a light weight, fire resistant, insulating concrete is produced that is ideal for roof decks and other applications. Perlite can also be used as an aggregate in Portland cement and gypsum plasters for exterior applications and for the fire protection of beams and columns.

Other construction applications include under-floor insulation, chimney linings, paint texturing, gypsum boards, ceiling tiles and roof insulation boards.

In horticulture, perlite can be used as a soil amendment or alone as a medium for hydroponics or for starting cuttings. When used as an amendment it has high permeability / low water retention and helps prevent soil compaction.
