Onion Seeds (black-cumin, also known as nigella or kalonji) is an annual flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae, native to south and southwest Asia.

  Nigellasativa grows to 20–30 cm (7.9–11.8 in) tall, with finely divided, linear leaves. 

The seeds of Nigellasativa are used as a spice in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. The black seeds taste like a combination of onions, black pepper and oregano. They have a pungent bitter taste and smell.

     Nigellasativa oil contains conjugated linoleic acid, thymoquinone, nigellone, melanthin, nigilline, damascenine, and trans-anethole.

Black onion seeds are rich in dietary value. The seeds contain amino acids, proteins and several essential minerals. Onion seed oil is known for its medicinal value. The oil is said to be the best cure for several body ailments. 

The onion plant, also known as the bulb onion or common onion, is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium.
