P. acnes bacteria create tiny molecules called porphyrins. When porphyrins are exposed to blue light they produce free radicals that kill the bacteria that cause inflammatory acne. This photodynamic therapy is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris or acne vulgaris that has not responded to other acne therapies.
