Attenuator is an electronic device which reduces signal power without appreciably distorting its waveform. Working in the opposite way of amplifiers which provide gain, attenuators actually kill gain.
Today, RF attenuators are widely applied in radio frequency signal conditioning and level control areas. They can be used to reduce the amplitude of an RF signal, match the impedances of sources and loads, and measure the gain or loss of a passive device made from voltage divider networks.
According to the technology they use, RF attenuators have three types: fixed attenuators, variable attenuators and switched attenuators.
