INTRODUCTION
DENIE-B EPS-P is a protease enzyme concentrate designed to be diluted prior to being used as an enzymatic rebating agent. On poorly bated pelts it reduces wrinkles and increases area yield. Its performance can be enhanced by the use of alpha-amylase enzyme (available from DENYKEM Limited).
Dilution may be undertaken by the tannery or, more commonly, by third party formulators who may blend it with other active constituents.
TEMPERATURE and pH PROFILES
The performance of enzymatic leather processing products depends upon process conditions such as temperature, pH, and time, nature of the substrate and enzyme concentration.
The nature of DENIE-B EPS-P means that it is effective in the temperature range used in the rebating process. Its optimum temperature for activity is approximately 45°C.
DENIE-B EPS-P is effective over a wide pH range (5.0 – 9.5) with optimum activity at pH 6.5 – 8.0.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
DENIE-B EPS-P has a high enzyme activity level and should not be used directly in leather processing stages in its neat form. The product should be diluted or used as a constituent of a rebating preparation prior to use. The dosage level of a dilution or preparation should be equivalent to using DENIE-B EPS-P at 0.008% – 0.012% on weight of hide. The preparation should be added at pH 5.0 – 5.5 during neutralisation and 60 - 120 minutes before the start of retannage.
If used specifically to obtain important area-yield gain, a dosage equivalent to 0.15% – 0.30% on weight of hide should be tried. When using such a high dosage it is even more important to do small scale trials.
Variations in hide and local conditions can affect the performance of leather processing chemicals. DENYKEM recommend that small scale tests are carried out under local conditions before using products in full scale production. This will avoid any overdosing and any damage that may result from it. This is especially important where poor quality or badly preserved hides are being processed.
TECHNICAL DATA (typical)
Appearance: Powder. (Note: Colour may vary. It is not an indication of product strength.)
Active constituent: Semi-acid protease.
Activity: 0.50 AU/g (Note: Based on correlation between activity assay tests and performance tests this is >17,000 LVU / g. The LVU test method is not designed to work under acidic conditions.)
Storage: Storage temperature should be controlled between 5° and 25°C. Keep in sealed containers and avoid exposure to moisture and high humidity.
Shelf life: 6 months minimum under correct storage conditions.
If there is an extended storage period, higher temperature or high moisture levels, dosage requirements may need to be increased.
HEALTH and SAFETY
As with all enzyme products special care needs to be taken to control exposure. Please see the safety data sheet.
TECHNICAL SERVICE
The DENYKEM team of technical advisors are available to recommend the most suitable enzymes for various leather processing stages. They can be contacted at DENYKEM’s UK production and development facility.
These conditions are only given as a guide. Tests should be carried out under local conditions to ascertain the optimum dosage for the machine type, fabric source and water conditions.
