Medium Density Fibreboard - MDF

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is man-made board made of wood fibers (or other plant fibres) mixed with glue (resin) under high temperature and pressure. The nominal density of MDF is 0.65~0.80g/cm3 . Actually, if the density of the fiberboard is between 0.585 (0.65X90%)g/cm3 and 0.88(0.80X110%)g/cm3 and the fiberboard can meet the technical standards of MDF, then the fiberboard can be called MDF. Generally speaking, the density of most commonly used MDF is 700~750KG/CBM.

The wood fibers for MDF can be hardwood or softwood . But other plant fibers , such as wheat straw and rice straw, can be used for producing MDF as well .

2. Melamine glue for moisture resistant MDF
3. Phenol glue for exterior MDF

Types of MDF
In European, some codes are used for classifying MDF.
CODE / Meaning
H:   Humid conditions
E:   Exterior conditions
L:   Load bearing usage for building applications
A:   Permanent loads
S:   Occasional loads

Medium Density Fiberboard can be classified:
1. MDF, General MDF used in dry conditions;
2. MDF-H, General MDF used in humid Conditions;
3. MDF-E, General MDF used in exterior Conditions;
4. MDF-LA, Permanent load bearing usage in dry conditions;
5. MDF-HLS, Occasional load bearing usage in damp conditions.

Formaldehyde emission grade:
MDF Class E1 - Low formaldehyde emission (not more than 9 mg/100 g);
MDF Class E2 - Basic emission grade (not exceeding 30mg/100g) .

Advantages of MDF
1. Cheaper than solid plank , plywood - because MDF is made of recycled wood ;
2. Dense and uniform density,  it's denser than most of lumber species;
3. Smooth, flat, uniform surface, suitable for the base of laminate and wood veneer;
4. Dimensional stability, won't bow, warp, twist like lumber or plywood;
5. Machinable, can be easily cut, drilled, machined and dowelled together.
6. Void free, knot free,
7. Paintable (much better than particleboard or plywood).

Disadvantages of MDF:
1. Some MDF have higher formaldehyde emission rates, which are harmful to health;
2. A large quantity of dust are released when machining MDF;
3. It swells after absorbed water or moisture;

MDF is often used for furniture, cabinetry, flooring, window, door, components, mouldings, road signs, wall panel, ceiling, crafts, decorating, packing and load-bearing component. Some of MDF have good moisture-resistant property. MDF can be used not only in dry conditions, but also in humid, high humid and even exterior conditions.
