What's Bentonite?

Bentonite is a clay minral predominantly consisting of mineral Montmorillonite mixed 

with some related minerals like Nontronite and Beidelite. These are three layered 

aluminosilicate with molecules of water between layers. For natural Sodium Bentonite, 

exchangeable sodium cations are predominant, rather than other cations like calcium, 

magnesium etc. Similarly in Calcium Bentonite, calcium cations are predominant. 

Generally speaking, the sodium variety has high swelling and gelling properities 

as well as good viscosity and liquid limit. So the properties of Sodium Bentonite is 

better than Calcium Bentonite. Sodium Bentonite is more popularly used in industries.

Advantage: 

Bentonite has the characteristic of high mud yield, high gel strength and low shear.

It can improve the borehole stability especially in unconsolidated formation. The 

high performance and low concentration of bentonite can reduce the dosage, 

cost and intensity of labor. 

Application:

Used for oil and gas well drilling and civil-engineering including drilling fluid system for 

horizontal directional drilling, fluid solution for diaphragm walls and piles, lubrication 

fluids for micro tunneling or pipe jacking, drilling fluids for water well, exploration and 

mining, fluid solution for shield tunneling.

Difference between Sodium Bentonite and Calcium Bentonite for drilling fluid application:

Bentonite is often used as the material of drilling fluid. The mud yield of sodium bentonite 

is higher and is commonly used in drilling industry. Calcium bentonite can't be used as 

the material of drilling fluid before modification treatment.

B) modified bentonite OCMA standard

C) drilling grade  (used in drilling fluid for plugging purpose)
