Conventional tapping requires manufacturers to use different taps depending on work materials and types of machine center used. A-TAP is a versatile tap series that excels in a wide variety of work materials and machining conditions to help manufacturers simply tool management.

Trouble-Free Chip Evacuation

Among the various chip problems, achieving smooth chip evacuation with a spiral tap in blind holes is particularly difficult and is a main cause of headache for many customers. This is due to the fact that in blind holes, the chip are pulled upward, where they can often get entangled in process. To resolve this problem and to improve the ejection of chips, OSG’s new A-SFT has adopted a variable helix flute design (see figure 2), which encourages stable chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces. The helix angle changes from the chamfer, where chips are formed, to the flutes, where chips are evacuated. This unique geometry enables greater chip control that can help produce tightly compacted chips for easy ejection from the hole. 

Figure 3 depicts a comparison of chip formation between a conventional tap and the A-SFT. As can be seen in the photographs, chips formed by the conventional tap are unstable, with curls in various shapes and sizes. Chips formed by the A-SFT, on the other hand, demonstrate stable chip evacuation in terms of both shape and consistency.

Excels Under Any Cutting Condition

In order to accommodate a wide range of cutting conditions, powdered metal HSS and TiCN coating have been employed to achieve excellent wear resistance. In addition, to enable high speed machining, the all new A-TAP series incorporates a cutting edge design that emphasizes sharpness. 

Figure 4 illustrates the performance capability of the new A-tap series. The chart is a conceptual diagram of cutting condition in medium and high carbon steels (S45C, etc.) with water-soluble coolant. The conventional tap was machining at a cutting speed of 25m/min or less; while the A-POT / A-SFT were capable of machining three times faster. However, there is a possibility of run-out when processing with an unstable machining center; hence it is recommended to utilize synchronized machines with speeds exceeding 15m/min.
