WHAT IS RESIN?

Resins are film-forming materials used in the manufacture of paints. It binds the pigment particles into a coherent film, which adheres to the substrate. Durability of the paint depends on the quality of the resin used. The choice of resin used depends on the end use of the paint. Alkyd Resin is oil-modified polyester.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION FOR ALKYD RESIN:

Raw materials from the storage tanks are pumped into the Reactor. The Reactor is heated to a temp of 240-250 degrees C after which a catalyst is added to the heated oil. This is mixed for some time after which polyols are introduced into the reaction. The temperature is then controlled between 240-260 degree C. The batch is then cooled to approx. 200 degrees C and the process of azeotropic distillation is started. The sample is checked for polymerization and transferred to the dilution blender through a filter where it is blended finally to get the desired finished resin depending on the solid content.

Alkyd resins from the largest group of synthetic resins are used in paint industry. Most air drying enamels are based on long or medium oil alkyd resins. These resins dry at room temperature and have excellent flow and leveling properties, good exterior durability and can be thinned with mineral turpentine. Oils used for producing alkyd resins are linseed oil, soybean oil and Dehydrated Castor Oil (DCO).For drying properties.Acts as a dispersant.Makes coating adhere to the surface.To provide resistance to water, chemicals and abrasion.For the suspension of pigments.To provide gloss and elasticity.Functions of Resin
