What is a cylinder head gasket?

A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head(s) in an internal combustion engine.

Its purpose is to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leakage of coolant or engine oil into the cylinders; as such, it is the most critical sealing application in any engine, and, as part of the combustion chamber, it shares the same strength requirements as other combustion chamber components.

How to tell if you have a blown cylinder head gasket?

• Watch your engine temperature gauge. If your car is constantly overheating it may be a symptom of a blown head gasket.
• Check the engine coolant level. If the car is constantly losing coolant, it may be because your car's coolant is leaking from the cooling system into the oil pan. This happens when the head gasket is blown.
• Check your car's oil level with the oil dipstick. If you notice froth on the dipstick, there may be coolant mixed in with the oil due to a faulty head gasket.
• Watch for sweet smelling white smoke with water droplets coming from the exhaust pipe. This could be a sign that the head gasket has been blown off.
