Ultrasonic level transmitter emits high frequency ultrasonic pulse form probe, meeting the measured medium surface, the pulse is reflected back, and part of the echo is received by the same probe and converted into electrical signals. Ultrasonic pulses transmit at the speed of sound, transmitted pulse and received pulse is proportional to the distance from the transducer to the measured medium surface. The relation distance S, sound speed C and transmission time T can be expressed by the formula: S = CxT / 2.

Since the ultrasonic pulse has a certain width, the reflected wave closer to the transducer within small area and transmitted wave overlap, it can’t be recognized, and measure the distance value. This area is called the measure blind zone. The size of the blind spot relates with ultrasonic level meter model.
