Product Description

1. ppgi sheet Introduce

Galvanneal is a steel product with a zinc-iron alloy coating on the steel surface, produced by the continuous hot-dipping process. To achieve the required zinc coating thickness for different coating specifications we need to pass a hot dipped strip through a variable low pressure, high volume air stream. The strip then enters a furnace and the heat converts the zinc coating to the zinc-iron alloy coating. There is no spangle, simply a grey matt appearance. It can be also produced as extra smooth type.

Q₁: Why galvanized steel

A₁:No other protective coating for steel provides the long life, durability and predictable performance of hot dip galvanizing. An alloy of its steel base, a galvanized coating is unique in matching the design and handling characteristics of steel.

As asset management and life-cycle costing become even more essential, after fabrication galvanizing provides the facility to design for a predictable, engineered result.

Galvanizing is a once only process, committed to the concept of the maintenance-free use of steel, ensuring long service life and virtually eliminating disruptive maintenance.

This long-term protection is well documented world-wide in terms ahead of any other protective coating, and galvanizing continues to find new applications in almost every field of engineering.

Q₂: Benefits of galvanized steel

A₂:The galvanizing process steel a durable, abrasion-resistant coating of metallic zinc and zinc-iron alloy layers bonded metallurgically to the steel base and completely covering the work piece. No other coating for steel matches galvanizing’s unique combination of properties and advantages:

1. For most classes of steelwork, galvanizing provides the lowest longterm cost. In many cases galvanizing also provides lowest initial cost.

2. The galvanized coating becomes part of the steel surface it protects.

3. The unique metallurgical structure of the galvanized coating provides outstanding toughness and resistance to mechanical damage in transport, erection and service.

4. The galvanized coating is subject to corrosion at a predictably slow rate, between one-seventeenth and one eightieth that of steel, depending on the environment to which it is exposed.

5. Galvanizing’s cathodic protection for steel ensures that small areas of the base steel exposed through severe impacts or abrasion, are protected from corrosion by the surrounding galvanized coating.

6. An inherent advantage of the process is that a standard minimum coating thickness is applied.

7. During galvanizing the work is completely immersed in molten zinc and the entire surface is coated, even recesses and returns which often cannot be coated using other processes. If required, internal surfaces of vessels and containers can be coated simultaneously.

8. Galvanized coatings are virtually ‘self-inspecting’ because the reaction between steel and molten zinc in the galvanizing bath does not occur unless the steel surface is chemically clean. Therefore a galvanized coating which appears sound and continuous is sound and continuous.

9. Galvanizing is a highly versatile process. Items ranging from small fasteners and threaded components, up to massive structural members can be coated.

10. The mechanical properties of commonly galvanized steels are not significantly affected by galvanizing.

11. Galvanizing provides outstanding corrosion performance in a wide range of environments.

12. ‘Duplex’ coatings of galvanizing-plus-paint are often the most economic solution to the problem of protecting steel in highly corrosive environments. Besides being inexpensive, durable and effective, this metal is also popular because it can be recycled and reused multiple times.

Q₄:Disadvantages of galvanized steel

A₄:There are relatively few disadvantages to galvanization, but it's not a good method for protecting all steel items. Some objects cannot be hot-dipped, often because they are too large or too small, and other forms of galvanizing often are not as protective and long-lasting. Eventually, the zinc will be corroded, although how long this takes depends on the thickness of the coating and the environment. Galvanized steel has a much shorter lifespan when it's regularly exposed to rain or seawater.

Galvanized steel that is cooled too slowly or stacked together before they have cooled completely can also have the outer zinc layer peel away. In some cases, small gaps can form between the zinc and the underlying alloy, which can also cause peeling. When a very thick coat of zinc is applied, it can also become brittle and flake off.

Q₅:Alternatives to Galvanization

A₅: Some metal items cannot be galvanized effectively; the coating of zinc would be too thick on a small screw, for example. In many cases, stainless steel, made with chromium, is used instead. Unlike galvanized metals, stainless steel is not coated in the metal; chromium is part of the composition of the steel alloy.
