- Networking Introduction
This section describes the networking model of the U-SYS solution.
Overview of the U-SYS Solution
NGN is a service-oriented network. It provides an independent service system by separating services from call control and separating call control from the bearer. In this way, it frees the service from the original network model.
With a number of service models, the NGN is able to provide the following services:- Voice service
- Data service
- Multimedia service
- Integrated service
- Edge access
- Core switching
- Network control
- Service management

Edge Access Layer
- Connecting subscribers and terminals to the network
- Converting the format of the information before transmission
The components on the edge access layer are as follows:
- Integrated access device (IAD): a device used to connect subscribers to the NGN. It transmits data of the subscriber terminals, voice services and video services to the packet network.
- Access media gateway (AMG): also called universal access unit (UA). It provides subscribers with analog subscriber access, integrated services digital network (ISDN) subscriber access, V5 subscriber access, and x digital subscriber line (xDSL) access. Huawei UA5000 is an AMG.
- Media terminal adapter (MTA): an access device working in Network-Based Call Signaling (NCS) (developed and extended from MGCP). The MTA transmits subscriber data, voice services and video services, and sends them to the IP network through the cable network. There are two types of MTA:
- SMTA: It is connected with cable modem through the network cable.
- EMTA: It is built in the cable modem.
- SIP phone: a multimedia device working in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
- H.323 phone: a multimedia device working in the H.323 protocol.
- SessionEngine (SE): an IP gateway developed by Huawei. It is often used at the portal of residential network and enterprise network, or at the convergence layer of a metropolitan area network (MAN). The SE functions as a firewall or a service gateway. When functioning as a service gateway, the SE provides private network traversal and Quality of Service (QoS).
- Signaling gateway (SG): a gateway that connects the Signaling System No.7 (SS7) network to the IP signaling network. It converts the signaling between the PSTN (SS7) and the IP network (packet signaling).
- Trunk media gateway (TMG): a gateway that resides between the circuit switched (CS) network and the IP network. It converts formats between the pulse code modulation (PCM) signal flow and the IP media flow.
- Universal media gateway (UMG): a gateway that converts media stream formats and signaling formats. It can be used as a TMG, an embedded SG, or a UA. The UMG can connect devices such as:
- PSTN exchange
- Private branch exchange (PBX)
- Access network devices
- Network access server (NAS)
- Base station controller (BSC)
Core Switching Layer
The core switching layer is composed of devices, such as routers and layer-3 switches that are located in the backbone network and in the MAN. It adopts the packet switching technology and provides subscribers with a common, integrated platform of data transport, which ensures:- High reliability
- QoS assurance
- High capacity
Network Control Layer
The network control layer adopts the software switching or softswitching technology to achieve:- Primary real-time call control
- Connection control
The softswitch is the core device in the NGN. It provides the following functions:- Call control
- Media gateway access control
- Resource allocation
- Protocol processing
- Routing, authentication
- Charging
- Application Programming Interfaces (API)
Service Management Layer
The service management layer provides value-added services and operation support. The components at the service management layer are as follows:
- Integrated operation support system (iOSS): includes an integrated charging system and a network management system which conducts centralized management on the NGN components.
- Policy server: manages subscriber policies, such as:
- Access control list (ACL)
- Bandwidth
- Traffic
- QoS
- Application server: produces and manages logics of value-added services and intelligent network (IN) services, providing a platform for a third party to develop services through the open APIs. The application server is the result of separating service from call control. It helps to develop supplementary services.
- Location server: manages the routes between the softswitches. It indicates the coverage of call destinations and ensures the efficiency of call routing. The location server prevents the routing table from being oversize, and also simplifies the routing.
- Media resource server (MRS): processes media streams in the basic and enhanced services. It provides functions of:
- Service tone playing
- Conference service
- Interactive voice response (IVR)
- Recorded announcement
- Advanced tone service
- Service control point (SCP): is the core component in the traditional IN, which is used to store subscriber data and service logics. The SCP starts a service logic based on the call events reported from the service switching point (SSP). It then, queries the service database and the subscriber database using the started service logic and sends proper call control instructions to the SSP on the next action. This helps to realize various intelligent calls, which is the main function of the SCP.
- Video server: schedules and manages video conferences, and provides video conferences to NGN users.
Basic Networking
This section describes the basic networking models of the SoftX3000.
- End Office Networking
The SoftX3000 can serve as a C5 office (end office) in the traditional PSTN to interwork with the RSP, V5 access device, PBX, and NAS. - Tandem Office Networking
When networking with Huawei UMG8900 and SG7000, the SoftX3000 can serve as a C4 office (tandem office) in the traditional PSTN. - Multimedia End Office Networking
The SoftX3000 can act as a multimedia end office to provide multimedia applications.End Office Networking
The SoftX3000 can serve as a C5 office (end office) in the traditional PSTN to interwork with the RSP, V5 access device, PBX, and NAS.

Networking Feature
- Interworking with the Remote Subscriber Processor
As part of the feature applications of UMG8900, the remote subscriber processor (RSP) connects to the UMG8900 through the internal protocol interface (E1 interface). The SoftX3000 controls the services through H.248, enabling a large-scale application of 200,000 subscribers. This is the most frequently applied solution to rebuild the existing PSTN exchange network.
- Interworking with the V5 Access Device
The SoftX3000 can provide standard V5.1/V5.2 interfaces by working with Huawei UMG8900 to achieve the interworking with access network devices and base station controllers such as Huawei ETS450.
- Interworking with the PBX and NAS
The SoftX3000 can provide standard PRIs or R2 trunks by working with the UMG8900 to achieve the interworking with the PBX and NAS.
Tandem Office Networking
When networking with Huawei UMG8900 and SG7000, the SoftX3000 can serve as a C4 office (tandem office) in the traditional PSTN.
Networking Structure
The SoftX3000 supports M2UA, M3UA, and ISUP. The SoftX3000 supports routing through the subroutes. That is, when a route is selected, a subroute under this route can be selected according to the routing strategy. Figure 1 shows the typical networking.
